Vintage Social Networking

Over the last few years Social Media has had its fair share of big companies. Myspace being a good example of a major dominating leader in their field, then suddenly getting pushed aside for Facebook. What happened?

I remember when it was all about Myspace. All your friends had it and you wasn't cool if you didn't have it. It was the best social networking site out there. Pretty sure everyone tried to get as many friends as possible, due to the obvious statement, 'the more Myspace friends you have, the more popular you look'. This has been an on going trend to date, except it's not so much about looking popular, it's for brands to get the 'word' out.

Social networking has turned into a massive advertisement banner. You see ad's everywhere, you get followers/friend requests from all these corporate brands just so they can can noticed. As Facebook now has a ratio of 1 in 10 people in the world have a Facebook account (or something similar), that means that  they have roughly 750 million users. Imagine the potential for new customers for your site just using Facebook alone.

Companies have found short cuts to finding new customers using various social media. But this is causing a stir up to regular users. Sites like Reddit and Digg are exploited of their initial uses. They are there for socially sharing links with people that are interesting and new etc. But it's quite easy for a company to post a link to their website and easily get a few hundred clicks without having to do much more. These two sites are full of spam links, which really annoys the users and nothing is being doe about it.

Anyway I've gone off on a tangent. Like I said, Social media has moved on, but for the good and for the bad. What will happen to it in the future?
